    Levee Inspection System Speeds Exploration of Fragile Levee Network;
    New Tool Finds Hidden Levee Faults

    Manteca, CA (PRWEB) May 10, 2006 -- Sandpiper Technologies Inc. (STI) announced a new Levee Inspection System that will speed inspection of internal levee structure and help pinpoint potential breaks in California's vast dam and levee network.

    "The purpose of any levee inspection tool is to allow engineers and responsible agencies to assess the soundness, structural health or risk of failure associated with a levee system," said John Christensen, CEO. "The STI Levee Inspection System is designed to discover hidden faults so project engineers can plan repairs proactively before any levee breaks occur."

    The Levee Inspection System weighs less than 20 pounds and includes two video probes for exploring various opening sizes, a head mounted video display (HMD) and the Sandpiper ELF digital video recorder. The ELF DVR, added in 2006, is the latest addition to the field-tested video probe system developed by Sandpiper Technologies in 1996.

    • Each four-meter probe tip contains a color video camera capable of detecting subtle water presence and other tell-tell markings the spell trouble for dam and levee stability.
    • The levee worker inserts the probe into the suspect opening and inspects the internal architecture of the opening.
    • Images are transmitted to the HMD for real-time assessment by the inspection worker.
    • STI's exclusive, ergonomic HMD leaves the worker's hands free to navigate the probe.
    • The ELF DVR catalogs each opening's interior and exterior for expert analysis in the comforts of the office.
    • Images recorded by the Sandpiper ELF DVR can be loaded onto any PC as still photos or video clips.
    • The levee engineer views this video document to help assess damages and schedule repairs.

    "Rodent burrows are a great concern for levee collapse and our burrow probes have been used for many years to inspect the 1,600 miles of California levees," said Christensen. "The Levee Inspection System is merely a tool to help the agencies responsible for levee maintenance do their job as easily and efficiently as possible."

    Located 80 miles east of San Francisco, Sandpiper Technologies, Inc. is an international supplier of environmental tools, video inspection systems and surveillance equipment. The company specializes in pole-mounted cameras, burrow probes, levee inspection systems and surveillance systems. STI's methanol fuel cells provide remote power for days, weeks, or months and when coupled with STI solar panels remote power can be extended for greater periods of time.
