May 30 1998 New Product Release (Sol-R-Station) Sol-R-Station powers surveillance equipment in remote areas The Sol-R-Station_ is ideal for powering electronic equipment in secluded areas with limited power sources. The solar unit was developed for wildlife researchers in the Farallon Islands who needed to power an audio vocalizer unit, also developed by Christensen Designs. Researchers find that the system helps power virtually any surveillance equipment, reducing the need to carry heavy batteries through rugged desert, seashore or mountainous terrain. The system is user-friendly, and includes a Gnomon to establish the most efficient angle for obtaining solar energy. (In the picture, the gnomon looks like a pencil attached to a string.) The solar cell puts out a nominal 10 Watts of electrical energy when reasonably illuminated. The charging regulator controls this energy flow into the battery, which powers the equipment. Depending on conditions, the system can easily provide 80 to 100 Watt-hrs. of energy per day. Christensen Designs will help configure the battery/system design for optimal use with surveillance equipment. When transporting or storing, the unit folds into a compact box the size of a small attache case, approximately 12 x 19 x 9 inches. The $725 system includes 10 Watt solar cell, charging regulator, 12 volt, 12 AMP-hr battery and compact carrying case. Located 75 miles east of San Francisco, Christensen Designs is a custom design engineering firm specializing in electronic, electro-mechanical and optical equipment.
